Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Kees: Learn Dutch ("Kees", "the app", "we") handles information when you use the app. Kees does not require an account and we do not sell your personal data.

Information We Collect

Kees is designed to keep learning progress on your device. Some features send the content needed for that feature directly to a third-party service, as described below.

• Microphone and speech: when you start a speaking or pronunciation exercise, the app records audio and sends it to Microsoft Azure Speech for speech recognition and, where applicable, pronunciation assessment. A reference sentence may be sent with pronunciation exercises. The temporary recording is deleted from the app's temporary storage after processing. We do not operate a server that stores these recordings.
• Text-to-speech: text you choose to hear may be sent to Microsoft Azure Speech to create audio. If Azure is unavailable, the app may send up to 200 characters to Google Translate text-to-speech as a fallback.
• Camera and Photos: used for Scan & Learn. The selected image is processed on the device with Google ML Kit to recognize text and is not uploaded by Kees. If you request a translation, the extracted text is sent to MyMemory.
• Translations, word suggestions and examples: text you submit for translation may be sent to MyMemory; Dutch word prefixes may be sent to Dutch Wiktionary for suggestions; and a Dutch word you add may be sent to Tatoeba to look for a Dutch example sentence and English translation.
• Vocabulary and progress data: stored locally on your device (e.g. My Words, quiz progress) so the app can work offline.
• AI Coach: if you choose to use an AI feature, the Dutch text, word, phrase or topic you enter is sent through Firebase AI Logic to the Google Gemini Developer API, and the generated response is returned to the app. Firebase AI Logic itself does not store prompts or responses, but Google may process and retain them under the Gemini API terms. Do not enter names, contact details, passwords, health information or other personal, sensitive or confidential information. Before the first AI request, Kees asks for your explicit permission to share this data with Google Gemini. AI Coach is available only after you confirm that you are at least 18.
• Purchases and subscriptions: RevenueCat and the Apple App Store or Google Play process an anonymous app user identifier, product and entitlement identifiers, purchase status, subscription dates and transaction information so Premium access can be purchased, verified and restored. Kees does not send RevenueCat your name or email address and does not process payment-card details.
• App integrity: Firebase App Check may process app, device and integrity signals through Google Play Integrity on Android or Apple App Attest/DeviceCheck on Apple devices to reduce unauthorised use of AI services. These signals are used for security and abuse prevention.
• Advertising and diagnostics data: Kees uses Google AdMob. Depending on your consent, device and region, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may process information such as IP address, app interactions, diagnostic information, and device or advertising identifiers to deliver, measure and protect ads. Personalized ads are used only where your consent and device settings permit them. Premium subscribers are not shown ads and Kees stops requesting new ads while Premium is active.

Premium Subscriptions

Kees Premium is offered through the Apple App Store and Google Play as monthly and yearly auto-renewing subscriptions. The store purchase screen shows the applicable local price, billing period and taxes before you confirm. Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel them through the same store before the next renewal. Deleting Kees does not cancel a subscription. Premium normally remains active until the end of the paid period after cancellation, subject to the store's rules.

Premium unlocks the complete bundled exam library, higher AI Coach usage limits and an ad-free experience. AI usage counters and other learning progress are kept locally on the device. Purchase access can be restored on the same store platform with the Apple ID or Google account used for the purchase. Apple and Google purchases are not synchronised with each other or with the Kees website.

Third-Party Services

These providers receive data directly from your device only when the related feature is used, except for advertising services that may run when ads are permitted:

• Microsoft Azure Speech - speech recognition, pronunciation assessment and text-to-speech. See Speech data, privacy and security and the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
• Google / Firebase - Firebase AI Logic and the Gemini Developer API for optional AI Coach requests; Firebase App Check for app-integrity protection; AdMob advertising; Google ML Kit on-device text recognition; and Google Translate text-to-speech fallback. • RevenueCat - anonymous purchase and subscription status, entitlement verification and purchase restoration. See the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
• Apple App Store / Google Play - payment processing, subscriptions and purchase restoration are handled by the store where you make the purchase. See Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy.
• MyMemory - translation of text submitted by you or recognized through Scan & Learn. See MyMemory API specifications.
• Tatoeba - example-sentence search for words you add. See Tatoeba Terms of Use.
• Wikimedia / Dutch Wiktionary - Dutch word suggestions. See the Wikimedia Privacy Policy.

Data Retention

Your vocabulary, saved items, settings, game results and learning progress remain on your device until you remove them, clear the app's data or uninstall the app. Kees does not keep a server-side account or learning-progress copy. RevenueCat and the relevant app store retain purchase and subscription records under their own policies. Firebase AI Logic itself does not store AI prompts or responses; the selected Gemini API provider may process or retain them under its terms, including for abuse monitoring and, where the unpaid-service terms apply, service improvement. Other providers may retain service or security logs under their own policies.

Your Choices

You can use most study content without granting microphone, camera or photo access. You can disable those permissions at any time in your device settings. You choose when to use speech, Scan & Learn, translation, word-suggestion, example-sentence and AI Coach features. AI Coach is optional and will not send text unless you both press its request button and grant the AI data-sharing permission. You can revoke that permission in Kees Settings; a later AI request will ask again before sharing data. Advertising privacy choices are available in the app when required; on iOS, tracking can also be limited via Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can manage or cancel a subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play account used for the purchase, and use Restore Purchases inside Kees on the same platform. No Kees Account

Kees does not require or offer a Kees account. We do not collect an email address or password for app login, and mobile Premium access is not synchronised with the Kees website or between Apple and Google store families. RevenueCat uses a random anonymous app user identifier; purchases can be restored using the applicable store account.

Security

We use platform protections and encrypted HTTPS connections when communicating with the services above. No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure.

Children's Privacy

Kees is designed for adult Dutch learners and is not directed at children. AI Coach may only be used by people aged 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through a connected service, contact us so we can help address the request with the relevant provider.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page.
